It is simply a matter of choice as to how or what you are cooking. However I much prefer my meats to be cooked without flames shooting up and attempting to consume both the meat and the cook! Therefore I much prefer the iron plate. However for this preference it's necessary to properly clean and resurface the plate so as to prevent the fast onset of rusting; an event guaranteed with an iron grate or plate in an outdoor grill. About the only way to prevent this is to clean them thoroughly and coat with cooking oil and take them indoors! But be careful... they are very heavy!!
